5 Clear Signs That Wind Has Damaged Your Roof

If windstorms are a common occurrence in your area, you may be worried about the potential damage to your property, particularly on your roof. Understanding the signs of wind damage is crucial for quick action and repair, preventing further deterioration. In this blog post, we’ll explore five indicators that suggest your roof’s integrity has been compromised by wind damage.

1. Missing or Damaged Shingles

One of the primary signs of wind damage is missing or visibly damaged shingles. When winds escalate, they can forcefully lift the shingles from your roof or cause them to crack, break, or curl. These damaged shingles are more than just an eyesore; they can leave your roof vulnerable to leaks and further structural issues if not addressed promptly.

2. Loose or Bent Flashing

Flashing serves as a seal between the roof’s joints and penetrations (such as vents, chimneys, and skylights) and the rest of the roof. Wind can loosen or deform this crucial component, creating gaps through which water can infiltrate your home. Noticing changes in the appearance or position of flashing is an immediate indication that wind has potentially jeopardized the waterproof barrier of your roof. Ignoring such signs can lead to significant water damage inside your home.

3. Granules in the Gutters

Asphalt shingles are coated with granules that protect against UV rays and provide fire resistance. High winds, however, can dislodge these granules, causing them to accumulate in your gutters or at the bottom of downspouts. While some granule loss is normal over the lifespan of your roof, an excessive amount after a windstorm may indicate that the shingles are no longer offering optimal protection.

4. Debris on the Roof or in the Gutters

Wind can carry along branches, leaves, and other debris, depositing them on your roof or in your gutters. This accumulation not only signals that wind has been actively moving over and potentially harming your roof but also poses a risk by clogging gutters and preventing proper water drainage.

5. Interior Water Damage

Sometimes, the first signs of wind damage are found indoors. Water stains on your ceilings or walls can indicate that wind has compromised your roof, allowing water to penetrate your home. Such damage can escalate if not addressed, leading to mold, mildew, and structural issues.
